Central temple of the Przemyśl archdiocese. Its creation dates back to 1375. Until 1412, in the form of a wooden church dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul, standing in the square next to today's church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The second cathedral served in the years 1412 - 1460 the Ruthenian cathedral church built of stone hewn in the courtyard of the Przemyśl Castle. The construction of the current cathedral in the Gothic style began with the Chapter bishop Mikołaj Błażejowski in 1495. Only walls and pillars remained. The reconstruction and interior furnishings were completed in the first decades of the 16th century. In 1578, the Przemyśl staroste, grand royal referendary - Jan Tomasz Drohojowski (died 1605), founded the current chapel of the Blessed Sacrament. Established on the site of an earlier rotunda of St. Nicholas. Due to the constant threat of Tatar and Wołochów invasions, the church was fortified, walled and equipped with cannons. The works lasted from 1460 to 1571. Inside the basilica, under the presbytery, there are foundations of a late Romanesque stone rotunda from the first half of the 13th century. The cathedral survived the 17th century war. The Gothic cathedral served the Przemyśl bishops until the beginning of the 18th century. Bishop Alexander Antoni Fredro decided to rebuild it in the Baroque style, this work was carried out in the years 1724-1744. A huge Baroque Altar and new stalls were placed in the presbytery. There are two dome chapels here. One of the Drohojowski family from 1578, and in 1724 a late-chapel Fredro chapel was built. This was influenced by the Przemyśl bishop Alexander Antoni Fredro of the Bończa coat of arms (1674-1734). In 1733, the vault collapsed, partially destroying the church's equipment and the crypt. By 1744, the church was rebuilt, and at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries it underwent another reconstruction, restoring the oldest parts of the church to its Gothic character. The belfry next to the church stands for the inhabitants of Przemyśl often serves as a landmark. From the 1880s to 1907, the temple was renovated, its architect was Tomasz Pryliński, and the sculpture was taken by Ferdynand Majerski; to commemorate his head was carved in stone on the outer facade of the temple. In 2014, crypts under the temple were made available to visitors. The most valuable element of the underground are the external walls of the Romanesque rotunda of St. Nicholas, probably from 1215, consisting of a circular nave and a horseshoe apse. In the lapidarium located here were placed architectural elements of the temple before the construction disaster of 1733, and in ossuaries the remains of the deceased buried here.
