Museum located in one of the most beautiful late Renaissance burgher houses in Poland. The building was erected in the 16th century, made of stone, with vaulted rooms in the ground floor and cellars. It was the property of the pharmacist Stanisław Smiszowic, and from 1633 Krakow merchant Wilhelm Orsetti, who rebuilt the house giving it the character of a representative burgher house. The massive body was decorated in the 17th century with a high attic crest, and arcades were introduced in the lower storey. The tenement house was a private property until 1945. After the war, it was donated to museum purposes. Currently, the lower hall and store on the ground floor exhibit exhibits related to the history of the city and the region. In the great chamber covered XVII. the eternal wooden ceiling features objects highlighting the character of the great chambers. On the first floor, exhibitions show stylized middle-class interiors. The museum has been operating since 1925. It collects documents and souvenirs related to the history of the city. In the 1920s, Jan Harlender, secretary of the Magistrate, was strongly involved in the work on establishing the Museum. This effort was crowned with the establishment of the city museum - on the 550th anniversary of the location of the city - and Jan Harlender became its first director. The museum had several headquarters, initially located in the Town Hall, in the years 1938-1945 in the Attavanti tenement house. During World War II, the collection was looked after by Kazimierz Gottfried, later the director of the Museum for many years.
